5 ways to transform your interior with a scheme that’s made to last.
Author: Lara Berry.
It’s the interiors trend that never fades, teaming neutral hues is a classic combination that can work in any home, whatever your style – and Salt and Steel can help you achieve it!
1. Start with key pieces
Laying the foundations for a stylish monochromatic room scheme can be easily done with a few carefully chosen pieces. In living rooms go for a statement chair, rug or coffee table to ground the look. In the dining room or kitchen, stools or chairs in neutral shades or metallics will give you a great base – these industrial metal stools are spot on for introducing the look with a rustic, edgy finish.
2. Play with textures
Make sure you don’t end up with a room that’s reminiscent of 80s classic Beetle Juice, by bringing in an eclectic mix of textures and finishes. Patterned and plain cushions in faux fur, luxe velvet, crushed linen or soft cotton with tassels or a pom pom trim will soften harsh furniture edges. While glass, stoneware and enamel accessories will all introduce different touch-me textures to add character and personality.
3. Add accessories
Now this is the fun part! Look out for the unusual and the interesting, the quirky and the characterful. We love the iron hand bookends for keeping your collection in order – try displaying your books with the spines towards the wall so the white pages are shown instead, creating the perfect monochromatic book shelf! Group three of the black ribbed candlesticks together on a table, mantel or windowsill and add a contrasting white tapered candle to complete the look. The accessories you display will enhance your scheme, the perfect finishing touch.
4. Use natural tones
A monochrome scheme doesn’t have to be a stark black and white, look to natural tones to add the contrast to your darker elements. These leather easy chairs in both black and a pale tan offer a great alternative – the curvaceous shape and stitching detail make these chairs a key piece in any scheme. Another favourite is the natural wall decoration which brings texture and interest with a clever contrast between the dried grasses, the binding and the metal hoop – setting the scene for a more natural, rustic monochromatic look.
5. Go outside
This is also a great theme to continue to your outside space. Whether you have a balcony, terrace or garden, look for monochromatic outdoor rugs that can transform a tired patio or update decking with that monochrome vibe. These floor cushions with handle are perfect for carrying around the garden. Pots in shades of black and grey and weathered white will provide the perfect home for your leafy greens. Next scatter these white bamboo lanterns with pillar candles at different levels to create a subtle glow as the sun goes down. Finish the look with a soothing water feature to take centre stage and transport you to far off shores as you sit back and relax… wine in hand.
There’s so much to choose from and it’s never been easier to introduce a monochrome scheme to your home.
